Bishop Christopher Saunders arrested at his home

The former Bishop of Broome, Christopher Alan Saunders, has found himself at the centre of a dramatic arrest at his residence in Western Australia's north.

Police from the WA Child Abuse squad descended upon his Piggott Way property late on Wednesday afternoon, taking the 72-year-old into custody.

Authorities have confirmed that an individual is currently assisting them with what they describe as a "longstanding investigation", and have charged Saunders with 14 counts of unlawful and indecent assault, two counts of sexual penetration without consent, and three counts of being a person in authority indecently dealing with a child.

The alleged charges date back to 2008 across Broome, Kununurra, and Kalumburu.

This arrest marks the culmination of five years of exhaustive police and internal church inquiries into disturbing allegations of sexual abuse levelled against Saunders by multiple men. These allegations initially surfaced in early 2020, sending shockwaves through the community. However, despite the gravity of the accusations, a prior investigation by WA Police concluded without any charges being brought against the former Bishop.

Throughout the ordeal, Emeritus Bishop Saunders vehemently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining his innocence despite the mounting pressure and scrutiny.

Recent developments, however, have thrust the case back into the spotlight. In the past few weeks, law enforcement authorities conducted raids on Saunders' property not once, but twice. The renewed vigour in the investigation appears to stem from a significant development: the emergence of a 200-page Vatican report, leaked late last year.

This damning report, allegedly detailing instances of misconduct and abuse within the clergy, was promptly handed over to the WA Police. Its contents have reignited interest in Saunders' case, prompting a fresh wave of investigative efforts aimed at uncovering the truth behind the allegations.

The swift and decisive action taken by law enforcement underscores the gravity with which authorities are treating allegations of abuse, particularly within the context of religious institutions. The arrest of a prominent figure such as Christopher Saunders sends a powerful message that no one, regardless of their position or influence, is above the law.

For the victims who have bravely come forward with their stories, this arrest represents a step towards justice and closure, even in the face of adversity and institutional resistance. It serves as validation for their courage in speaking out against abuses that may have long been buried in secrecy and silence.

Images: 7News

Why Absolutely Fabulous would not work today

Jennifer Saunders has long been gracing the screens in movies, on television and on the stage, entertaining audiences with her wit for over four decades.

The comedy veteran is perhaps best known for starring and co-creating the hit ‘90s series Absolutely Fabulous.

The series follows a dysfunctional relationship between a self-obsessed PR boss and her daughter, and it has been brought back with new episodes various times over the years, even spawning a movie in 2016.

The show, which covered several risqué topics, would likely not get the green light if it were pitched today, Saunders told Today.

"It is not because of cancel culture, it's just you have to jump through so many hoops," she said.

"There's lots more people to make a decision - 20 or 30 years ago people would commission it and you wrote it and it went on telly - I don't think it was the content, the content would seem dated nowadays.

"It is not the cancel culture or the wokeness, there is just an age where you turn into the old farts and you back the old establishment and the new people come up and take over.”

Although we might not see Saunders’ witty Edina Monsoon or Jennifer Lumley’s Patsy stone return to the screens, Saunders shows no signs of leaving the entertainment industry.

The comedy queen has continued to make audiences laugh, working on a number of projects over the recent years and will be starring in a new drama Allelujah with Dame Judy Dench, which will be released on April 6.

British boxer apologises for video showing how to hit women

A British boxer has apologised after a video emerged of him giving advice to men on how to attack their female partners if argument ensues during the coronavirus lockdown.

In a clip reportedly circulated on WhatsApp, 30-year-old Billy Joe Saunders could be seen giving tips to men on how to react if “your old woman is giving you mouth” and “she’s coming at you, spitting a bit of venom in your face”.

The WBO super middleweight champion used a punchbag to demonstrate how to “hit her on the chin” and then “finish her off”.

Following widespread backlash, Saunders apologised if he “offended any women”.

“I would never condone domestic violence and if I saw a man touch a woman I would smash him to pieces myself,” he wrote on a Twitter post.

“I have a Daughter and if a man laid a finger on her it would be end well.”

Saunders’ Twitter account has since been deleted.

The new coronavirus has been increasingly used as a form of abuse against family violence victims, the ABC reported.

According to Liz Thomas, chief executive of Victorian social services organisation Wayss, she had received six reports in the past week of men using the virus to threaten and coerce women.

“It’s a real form of abuse we have not experienced before,” she told the outlet.

“Perpetrators have actually used COVID-19 as a form of abuse, telling their partner that they have the virus therefore they can’t leave the house.

“Inviting people into the house where the woman is self-isolating, saying that the visitor has COVID-19 and he's going to infect them.”

Thomas said people at risk “are now more vulnerable than ever”.

Carly Flynn takes a one-week venture into retirement

TV presenter and journalist Carly Flynn might not need to worry about retiring for a decade or two yet, but when it comes to financial security in old age it doesn't hurt to get a heads up on what to expect.

The 37-year-old has spent the past week experiencing life on $374 a week – the estimated amount she might earn as a retiree, based on an average New Zealand salary if she works until age 65, and superannuation stays the same.

Flynn took the frugality challenge for New Zealand Money Week, an annual campaign to get people to think about their personal finances. The focus this year was to engage people with their KiwiSaver account.

Her budget was a paltry $53 a day, which once bills were deducted shrank still further, to a meagre $24.

The week was spent in activities typical of the average retiree: gardening and going to the library – "in other words, things I could do for free".

Her daily latte was a goner, and a wine night with friends was skipped. Meals consisted of culinary delights such as porridge, tuna, spaghetti and eggs on toast.

All in all the North Shore mum of two found the exercise to be "a real eye-opener".

Flynn reckons living on $374 is "definitely achievable" and she knows thousands of other Kiwis do it every week. Some manage on even less. But it would be nice to have a little extra at the end of one's working life.

"I think I'd like more for when I retire so that I can travel and still shop."

Flynn joined KiwiSaver eight years ago but has been categorised as having a "set and forget" approach to her retirement planning. An inspection of her savings gave cause for alarm and she decided to double her contribution and change her fund and investment type.

"I did a bit of research before I accepted the challenge and realised my own KiwiSaver savings were pretty abysmal and I'd have bugger all to live on at 65. I thought right, yeah, I actually have to do this health check because no one else is going to look after me.

"It's interesting. We all sort of think that someone's going to look after us once we turn 65 or that we'll flog our Auckland properties and go and live in the provinces.

"The reality is if I don't start saving now I'm going to have a pretty miserable retirement, or not the kind of retirement I imagine for myself."

And that's a reality a few Kiwis might need to face. A recent Westpac-Stuff poll of 700 people found only 15 per cent believed themselves to be in a financially comfortable position to retire, while 43 per cent had done nothing at all to prepare for retirement.

According to Westpac's head of wealth products Nigel Jackson "New Zealanders are pretty poorly prepared for retirement".

Flynn says she began the week unsure how she would fare. In the end, she was lucky enough to receive a heap of tips and tricks she intends to keep using. She had also been given plenty of feedback from friends and relatives – including one very happy father.

"This is a dream for my Dad. He's tried to preach that sort of stuff forever."

Written by Josh Fagan. Carly Simon finally reveals the man her song, You’re So Vain, is about

It’s the hit 80s song that a generation of post-breakup teens yelled in their bedrooms. The song that we all sung with a certain someone in mind, that seemed to make even the most musically gifted abandon all self-control and belt at the top of their lungs.

But for years the true muse behind Carly Simon’s famous song You’re So Vain has been kept a secret. Until now.

Simon’s new memoir, Boys in the Trees, is a tell-all about the young musicians life and the stories behind her iconic hits. For decades fans believed You’re So Vain was about music executive David Geffen or Mick Jagger.

“I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren [Beatty],” the star told People magazine.
